Dental implants are increasingly the preferred way and “Gold Standard” to replace teeth. It is the best of what we have to offer as a profession to mimic a natural tooth as closely as possible. There are numerous reasons why implant-supported crowns, bridges, and/or dentures are a good alternative to conventional bridges and dentures and a great way to rebuild the appearance and function of your smile and mouth. Intentional Smiles in Edmond, Oklahoma, has provided four benefits of artificial teeth designed with implants.
Each implant is precisely inserted into the spot in the jawbone where a tooth used to be. The implant and bone then grow together naturally to provide a strong foundation for the prosthetic tooth. Once the implant site is fully healed, a tooth is attached to the implant through a connector or “abutment” piece, the implant functions like a natural tooth root. Since the prosthetic is anchored in the jaw, the new tooth is not going anywhere! This is a particularly important benefit for those individuals with many missing teeth. Their dentures are connected to as few as four to six implants. The denture stays put because it is effectively “rooted” in the jawbone.
Any time you can create something artificial that mimics its natural counterpart, you generally support the best possible outcomes. Teeth that are held in place by implants do just that – they “mimic” the design or structure of a natural tooth. No other method to replace teeth before or since does that. Our patients with implants love how their new teeth do not look like false teeth. They look like the “real deal.” Additionally, when lab-made teeth are designed like real ones, you can eat, speak, and use your new teeth naturally.
Dental implant crowns, bridges, and dentures can largely be cared for like natural teeth. This is not the case with traditional bridges and dentures. The alternative often requires special flossing products and techniques to adequately clean underneath the tight space created when placing a bridge. The former option involves soaking, other cleaning techniques, and denture cleansing products. Plus, standard dentures need ongoing relines and repairs to adapt to the changing gum tissues and jaw bone. Unlike implants that keep the bone in the jaw healthy and strong, dentures hasten the effects of bone loss. When this happens, patients notice that their dentures no longer fit as well as when they first got them. The denture may slide around. To fix this problem, the denture base would need to be relined or otherwise adjusted to better conform to the changing shape of the mouth. These challenges are avoided with implants.
Implant teeth are made to be one of the longest-lasting and lowest-maintenance restorations we have available. If you take good care of them with brushing, flossing, and regular visits to our office in Edmond, OK, you will maximize the lifespan of the restorations. Over decades of use, you will notice that other parts of your mouth and teeth will change, sometimes requiring adjusting the prosthetic. The great news is most changes and repairs require no anesthesia and are relatively simple processes once the implant is stable. Invest in yourself today.
