What do you mean by conservative – and why does it matter?
Conservative dentistry is all about keeping as much of the natural tooth structure and tissues intact. Traditionally, getting veneers has involved removing otherwise healthy tooth structure to make room for the veneer that goes on top of the imperfectly shaped, poorly sized, worn-down, and stubbornly stained tooth. Our special techniques and products deliver veneers that do not require removing otherwise healthy and natural tooth material. This approach helps to support the best possible outcomes, as well as a great treatment experience.
What types of veneers do you place?
We can place both types of veneers, direct resin or indirect porcelain. What we strive for is the least invasive and most life-like option that provides the longest lasting, esthetic result. The majority of the time, after discussing the pros and cons of your specific needs and desires we perform direct resin veneers because it is the least invasive and require no removal of natural tooth structure. We design and secure “direct resin veneers.” These veneers are made from a plastic-like composite prepared to match your natural teeth’ color and other characteristics perfectly. This material and associated techniques allow for the most conservative or tooth-preserving preparation.
Will you need to numb my mouth?
No! That is one of the many benefits of our conservative approaches. With these veneers, no removal of the natural protective covering (enamel) is necessary. This step can produce sensitivity or discomfort. Since it is avoided, we do not need to administer local anesthetic. Patients appreciate that they prevent the prolonged numbing sensation. Our patients with dental fear or apprehension also like this needle-free (and drill-free) approach, as the anesthetic/numbing step is often a trigger for dentistry-related anxiety.
What preparation IS involved?
Very minimal. We polish the teeth to be treated to remove any plaque and food debris and apply a conditioning liquid, which supports a strong bond between the natural tooth and the resin. The teeth themselves are also isolated. That way, Dr. Barton can evenly apply the dental composite to the tooth to get the best, most natural-looking results.
How long do these veneers last?
That depends on how you take care of them! Conservative preparations on their faces help to promote long-lasting results. That’s because they make the most of the natural tooth structure. In doing so, we also encourage the most natural appearance of the treated teeth. But, any treatment performed at Intentional Smiles is a partnership between the dental team and you, the patient. Avoiding behaviors or habits that could damage the resin is essential. This includes protecting your teeth with night guards if you have bruxism (chronic teeth grinding). Even seemingly little habits, like opening packages with your teeth, can be problematic. These little things can cause significant damage.
