At Intentional Smiles, Dr. Taylor G. Barton and his team in Edmond, Oklahoma, work with patients to help them restore their smiles when problems arise. For many patients, dental crowns can be a solution that fits their needs. But what is a dental crown, and how does a patient know if they need one? And what are CEREC crowns? We are pleased to offer quality same-day dental crowns with CEREC, a technology not available at every dental facility. Below are some frequently asked questions about our CEREC single-visit restorations.
A dental crown is best described as a dental restoration commonly used to cover or “cap” the top of a damaged or decayed tooth. It is also used for cosmetic purposes to improve the appearance of a tooth. You may require a dental crown if you have a large cavity that cannot be filled, a cracked or broken tooth, or recently completed root canal therapy.
CEREC, an acronym for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, provides same-day dental crowns. These custom-made ceramic restorations are created and placed in just one appointment using advanced CAD/CAM technology. This eliminates the need for several different appointments and temporary restorations.
CEREC combines computer-aided design (CAD) and manufacturing (CAM) to create custom dental crowns. First, Dr. Barton takes digital images of the tooth using a special scanner. These images are then used to create a three-dimensional model of the tooth on a computer. The crown is designed on this virtual model, and the information is sent to a milling machine that creates the actual restoration out of a block of ceramic material.
Yes, CEREC same-day crowns are considered safe and have been proven to be successful in restoring damaged teeth. CAD/CAM milling is how many crowns are made in dental laboratories today, and this is the same technology used in our office. We utilize this technology to provide more convenient care to our patients. It also allows Dr. Barton to control the quality and put his artistic touch on each crown designed. The technology used in creating these crowns is extremely precise, and the final result is a strong and durable restoration that looks and feels like a natural tooth.
With proper care and maintenance, including regular evaluations and cleanings, CEREC same-day crowns can last many years. You should expect the same longevity from a CEREC crown made at Intentional Smiles as you would get from any laboratory. Follow proper oral hygiene practices at home and visit your dental team regularly for check-ups to ensure the longevity of your crown.
